BBQ Islands

Planning a BBQ Island: Layout, Materials, and Appliances

A BBQ island is one of the highest-use features you can add to a backyard, but only if it's planned around how you actually cook and entertain — not just what looks good in a photo.

Layout: A straight island works well against a wall or patio cover edge and is the most cost-effective. An L-shape adds a bar-seating leg and works well when you want guests facing the cook. A full outdoor kitchen with a separate bar table suits larger yards and frequent entertaining.

Countertop material: Granite and concrete are the two most common choices. Granite offers a polished look with many color options and resists heat and stains extremely well. Poured concrete countertops are highly customizable in shape, color, and edge profile, and develop a warm, slightly textured character over time.

Siding: Stone veneer and stucco are the most popular finishes, chosen to match the home's existing exterior. Wood-plank veneer has become popular for a warmer, more modern look, though it requires more attention to weatherproofing than stone or stucco.

Appliances: Choose your grill brand first (Bull, Weber, and Napoleon are common, reliable choices), since the grill's cutout dimensions drive the island's core layout. From there, add a side burner, mini fridge, or drawers based on how you actually use the space — resist the urge to add appliances you won't use just because there's room.
