Patio Covers

Solid vs. Lattice Patio Covers: Which Fits Your Space?

Patio covers generally fall into two categories: solid roof covers and open lattice covers, and the right choice depends on how you plan to use the space beneath it.

Solid patio covers use insulated roof panels that block 100% of sun and rain, making them ideal for outdoor kitchens, TVs, furniture, and anything you don't want exposed to weather. They also support ceiling fans and recessed lighting for year-round use.

Lattice covers use spaced slats that filter sunlight rather than blocking it entirely. They keep a patio noticeably cooler than open sun while still letting in natural light — a popular choice over dining areas where full shade would feel too closed-in.

Attached vs. freestanding is a separate decision: attached covers tie into the home's existing roofline and are typically more cost-effective, while freestanding covers stand on their own footings and give complete design freedom, which matters most on hillside lots or yards where the patio sits away from the house.

Material choice — aluminum vs. wood — affects maintenance more than looks: aluminum requires virtually none and holds up better in coastal or high-UV climates, while wood offers a warmer aesthetic but needs periodic refinishing.
