The interview is the backbone of documentary, journalism, and many of the best YouTube channels. Yet most people approach it wrong โ€” they focus on questions when they should focus on comfort.

Pre-Interview: The Setup Matters

Arrive early. Let your subject sit in the chair before cameras roll. Talk about anything except the topic. Get them laughing. By the time you hit record, they've forgotten they're on camera.

The Power of Silence

After a subject finishes answering, wait. Don't rush to the next question. Silence makes people uncomfortable, and they fill it with their most honest, unguarded thoughts.

Open-Ended Always

"What was that like?" beats "Was that difficult?" every single time. Binary questions get binary answers. Open questions get stories.
